TIE Renewal

Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero

Your TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is your official identity document as a foreigner living in Spain. We handle the entire renewal process digitally, from securing your cita previa to submitting your application.

The TIE is a physical card that proves your legal status as a non-EU foreigner residing in Spain. It contains your NIE number, photo, and residency type. Unlike the green EU certificate, the TIE must be renewed periodically - typically every 2 or 5 years depending on your residency type. Missing your renewal deadline can result in fines and complications with your legal status.

Online notary available: Many of our services can be completed via online notary from the comfort of your home. Where in-person notarization is required or preferred, we can arrange this at a notary local to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about tie renewal

We recommend starting 60 days before your current TIE expires. This gives enough time to secure an appointment and process the application.

You can still renew up to 90 days after expiry. After 90 days, you may face penalties and a more complex process. Contact us immediately if you're in this situation.

Processing typically takes 4-6 weeks from submission. You'll receive a resguardo (receipt) that allows you to stay legally while waiting.

Travel within the Schengen area is generally fine with your resguardo. For travel outside Schengen, we recommend waiting for your new card or applying for a return authorization.

If you've changed jobs, ended studies, or had other changes, let us know. We'll advise on what additional documentation may be needed.
